A note from Chuck Brunner on...The importance of converting CAD files to STL

Chuck Brunner RedEye |
If you have ever ordered from RedEye, you may have received a part that looked a little different than what you envisioned or a little unlike the file you submitted. The reason that happens is because our technology builds exactly what it sees in the files you submit, which is what you want, right? Unfortunately, sometimes data is lost when you convert your CAD files to STL files unless you properly adjust the settings before you start the conversion. RedEye's STL File Analyzer will analyze the size and geometries of your part, but not the surface finish.
We know how important it is for you to receive the right parts the first time you submit a file, which is why we want to stress the importance of accurate conversion. You can easily set resolutions within your CAD program to minimize faceting and improve the end result of your application. Each CAD program has its own threshold settings. You can find information on how to set the resolutions on your CAD program by reading the CAD-to-STL instructions on our Web site. Scroll down the page to find your particular CAD program and the accompanying directions.
Every rapid prototyping organization uses STL files to build your parts as do all of the RP quoting engines. By ensuring that you properly converted your design in STL format, you will ensure that your parts get to you faster and right the first time.
(Note: In order to ensure the best STL output,
contact your CAD vendor for technical info on exporting good STL
files.)
