ULTEM - High Performance Thermoplastic Material

UltemULTEM* is a high performance thermoplastic that is strong, lightweight and flame-retardant.

Popular Applications

  • End Use Parts

  • Form, Fit and Function Testing

  • Jigs & Fixtures

Typical Parts

  • Aircraft Apparatus

  • Automotive Elements

  • Military Components

ULTEM is an ideal material for designers seeking strong, lightweight materials for their digital manufacturing projects. The unique properties, geometry considerations, accuracy and build dimensions are detailed below.

Unique properties

RedEye On Demand proudly offers ULTEM in the following blend: ULTEM 9085.

ULTEM carries a variety of exceptional thermoplastic properties. Its strength to weight ratio, V-Ø rating for flame, smoke and toxicity (FST), flight certification, and high heat deflection temperature (320° F / 160° C) set ULTEM apart from any other thermoplastic currently available from RedEye On Demand.

  • V-Ø rating for flame, smoke & toxicity (FST)

  • Full FST compliance including OSU heat release of less than 55/55, or 55 kw min/m2 for heat release and 55 kw/m2 for peak heat release.

  • High heat deflection temperature (320° F / 160° C)

  • High strength to weight ratio

  • Durable enough to handle some flexing

  • Flight & other certifications in aerospace industry

ULTEM 9085 is certified for use on commercial aircrafts** and has proven success for electric / electrical components, microwave applications, pump and valve parts, marine and automotive manufacturers.

**Note: The ULTEM 9085 material itself has been certified for flight. Finished parts produced from our FDM systems are not yet qualified. It is the responsibility of the manufacturer to determine the suitability of all the component parts and materials used in their finished products.

Geometry Considerations

ULTEM utilizes a break-away support structure. These supports have to be manually removed. Because of this some geometries and features will have support structures that are difficult to remove.

If your project includes geometries in the list below, you may want to consider another material from RedEye On Demand. Check with an Account Manager at 866-882-6934 or enquiries@redeyerpm.com.au before placing your order.

  • Small internal holes or cavities especially if they are deep and hard to access.

    • Example: small holes or channels, less than 0.25 inch extending 0.5 inch or more into the part.

    • Example 1, Example 2

  • Small features that may be surrounded by support during the building process.

    • Example: Based on our build orientation; tabs or bosses 0.10 inch or less. If these features can be built in an orientation where no support is contacting them then they build without problems.

    • Example

Achievable Accuracy

FDM models are produced within an accuracy of +/- .005 inch (+/- .127 mm) up to 5 inches (127 mm).

Accuracy on models greater than 5 inches (127 mm) is +/- .0015% for both units.

Note: Accuracy is geometry dependent.

Maximum Build Dimensions

  • 16 x 14 x 16 (inch)

  • 406 x 355 x 406 (mm)

RedEye On Demand is the only service provider to offer ULTEM for digital manufacturing through our patented additive fabrication process.

* ULTEM is a trademark of SABIC Innovative Plastics IP BV. The actual formulation is ULTEM 9085.
